So, you’ve just had your lawn hydroseeded—congratulations! You’re well on your way to growing a lush, healthy lawn. But your job isn’t over yet. Proper aftercare is the key to turning that green slurry into a thick, vibrant yard.
At Eastern Iowa Hydroseed, we don’t just spray and walk away—we want your lawn to thrive. Here’s what you should expect (and do) in the weeks following hydroseeding.
📆 Week-by-Week Hydroseed Growth Timeline
Week 1:
Germination begins within 5–7 days (longer in cooler temps).
The mulch may appear green or blue—this is normal and protects the seed.
You may see small sprouts by day 7.
Week 2–3:
Grass begins filling in.
Some areas may grow faster depending on sun, water, and soil.
Keep foot traffic off the area during this stage.
Week 4–5:
Your lawn should be thickening and more even.
First mowing can typically happen when grass reaches 3–4 inches.
You’ll see fuller, greener coverage with proper watering.
💧 Watering Is EVERYTHING
Consistent moisture is vital during the first 3–4 weeks.
Days 1–14: Water 2–3 times per day for 10–15 minutes per zone. Keep the soil damp, not soaked.
Days 15–30: Water once daily or every other day, depending on rainfall.
After 30 Days: Transition to deep watering 2–3 times per week.
💡 Pro Tip: Use a sprinkler timer to stay consistent.
✂️ Mowing: Timing It Right
Wait until grass reaches at least 3 inches tall.
Mow with a sharp blade and only cut the top third.
Avoid mowing when the lawn is wet—this can cause ruts and stress young grass.
🍃 Fertilizing for Long-Term Success
We include starter fertilizer in the hydroseed mix.
Apply your first follow-up fertilizer around 4–6 weeks after seeding.
Choose a slow-release, high-nitrogen fertilizer to promote root and blade growth.

🚫 What NOT to Do
Don’t walk on new grass—it can flatten or kill tender seedlings.
Don’t skip watering, even if it looks like it’s growing.
Don’t mow too early—you’ll risk uprooting young plants.
