Retaining Walls Create Challenging Revegetation Zones

Retaining walls — whether timber, concrete block, poured concrete, or segmental retaining wall systems — create specific vegetation challenges above and below them. The area above the wall where the retained slope transitions to a yard grade is a high-erosion zone. The area at the base of the wall where runoff concentrates is a wet, shaded zone. Both require intentional vegetation planning to establish successfully and hold.

Above-Wall Slope Treatment

The slope above a retaining wall in Iowa City or Decorah is often steeper than the natural grade — the wall was installed specifically to manage a slope that could not otherwise be stabilized. This means the vegetation on the slope above the wall is critical to wall performance: root systems in the slope soil reduce the hydrostatic pressure the wall must resist, and surface vegetation prevents erosion that progressively removes support from the slope.

Hydroseeding with BFM on steep above-wall slopes provides the combination of immediate surface protection and rapid root development needed in these critical zones.

Below-Wall Zone Treatment

The zone at the base of a retaining wall receives concentrated runoff from above the wall through the wall's drainage system and surface overflow. This zone is often wet, shaded by the wall face, and compacted from construction. Shade-tolerant, moisture-tolerant species — fine fescues, native sedges — are the appropriate choice for this zone.

Decorah Bluff Country Applications

In Decorah's limestone bluff country, retaining walls are common on residential and commercial properties that manage grade changes in the steep terrain. The combination of shallow, rocky soils and steep slopes above walls makes proper revegetation particularly important for long-term wall performance.
