So you’ve just had your lawn professionally hydroseeded—congrats! You’re on your way to a thick, green, and beautiful yard. But here’s the catch: the first few weeks after hydroseeding are critical. How you care for your new lawn during this time can make or break your results.
At Eastern Iowa Hydroseed, we want every customer to succeed. Here are the 7 most common mistakes homeowners make after hydroseeding—and how to avoid them.
1. 🚫 Not Watering Enough (or Watering Incorrectly)
Hydroseed needs consistent moisture to germinate. If the slurry dries out, so do your chances of strong growth.
✅ What to Do:
Water 2–3 times daily for the first 2–3 weeks (light, frequent watering)
Keep the soil moist—not soaked—for best germination
After 3 weeks, switch to deeper, less frequent watering to encourage root growth
2. 🚫 Walking or Mowing Too Early
Walking, mowing, or letting pets roam on fresh hydroseed can damage seedlings before they’re strong enough to recover.
✅ What to Do:
Avoid heavy foot traffic for at least 3–4 weeks
Wait to mow until grass reaches 3–4 inches tall, and never cut more than ⅓ of the height in a single mow
Use a sharp mower blade to avoid tearing young grass
3. 🚫 Ignoring Weeds
Weeds love bare soil. It’s normal for some weeds to appear alongside your new grass, especially in disturbed areas.
✅ What to Do:
Do not apply herbicides for at least 6–8 weeks after seeding
Once the lawn is established, a selective weed control plan can be implemented safely
Regular mowing helps discourage weed growth
4. 🚫 Applying Fertilizer Too Soon (or Not at All)
Hydroseed includes starter fertilizer, but your new lawn will need more nutrition after a few weeks.
✅ What to Do:
Apply a slow-release fertilizer around 4–6 weeks after seeding
Use a balanced formula (like 10-10-10 or similar)
Avoid high-nitrogen products too early, as they can burn tender seedlings
5. 🚫 Expecting Instant Results
Hydroseeding is not like sod—it takes time and patience. Some areas may germinate faster than others.
✅ What to Do:
Be patient—you’ll see growth in 7–21 days, but full coverage can take 6–8 weeks or more
Growth is slower in colder weather or shady areas, which is normal
Re-seeding or touch-ups may be needed in thin spots
6. 🚫 Letting Erosion or Runoff Go Unchecked
Heavy rain, slopes, or poor drainage can wash away slurry before seeds root.
✅ What to Do:
Water gently (especially on hills) to avoid runoff
If heavy rain is expected, consider placing straw or erosion blankets on steep slopes

7. 🚫 Failing to Communicate With Your Installer
Many post-seeding issues can be prevented with clear instructions and timely follow-up.

Reach out early if you see any problems—catching issues quickly makes them easier to fix
